Best Micellar Water Cleanser in Town!

Chances are, by now you’ve heard of micellar water. This French-favorite facial cleanser is officially one of the trendiest skin care products of the moment—and for good reason. Not only can micellar water be used to cleanse skin without rinsing afterward, but it’s also super gentle and quite multipurpose, not to mention its many practical benefits. A quick refresher on how it works: Micellar water is powered by micelles—tiny oil molecules—that act as a magnet to pull makeup and impurities from the surface of your skin. How cool is that? Below, find the best micellar water to suit your skin’s needs and learn five different ways to add micellar water into your skin care routine.
Peek inside the medicine cabinets of models, celebrities, and makeup artists (or, really, anyone you meet with flawless skin who just happens to speak with a French accent), and there's a very good chance that you'll see a bottle of micellar cleansing water. Long popular in France, this skin-care product that looks and feels just like regular water is finally picking up stateside for its ability to remove makeup, cleanse, and tone with just a few light swipes of a cotton ball. With micellar waters, even the toughest waterproof makeup, melts cleanly off skin with zero irritation. They contain no alcohol, and are comprised of only dirt-loving micelle molecules that attach to makeup and debris to break it down, according to New York City–based dermatologist Debra Jaliman. Here's what you need to know about 11 of these effective, incredibly gentle makeup-removing cleansers.
Micellar (pronounced my-sell-er) water is a combination of purified water; hydrating ingredients, such as glycerin; and low concentrations of extremely mild surfactants, according to cosmetic chemist Joseph Cincotta. "The molecules of those mild surfactants naturally group together to form microscopic spheres called micelles, which act like magnets for dirt and oil," Cincotta explains. When you wipe a cotton ball soaked with the cleanser along your face, the micelles adhere to the cotton while pulling makeup, sebum, and any other daily unpleasantness off the skin. The formulas are so light and gentle that there's no need to rinse them off, which means that the moisturizing ingredients can stay behind to be absorbed.

"They're especially great for acne-prone types," says dermatologist Francesca Fusco. "They remove trapped debris from the skin but don't dry it out. I also tell my patients to use a micellar cleanser between reapplications of sunscreen during the summer to avoid clogged pores."

Micellar water may only be a recent phenomenon in the States, but those in the beauty know (namely makeup artists and models who worked extensively in Europe) have been using the stuff for years. And by stuff, we mean Bioderma, the original micellar cleanser. Available for decades at French pharmacies, makeup artists would stock up on it during fashion week in Paris — reason being it's great to use backstage (where sinks are hard to find) and perfect for models whose skin has become sensitized after four weeks of five shows a day. In 2018, all you have to do is ask Alexa to get a bottle of Bioderma delivered right to your door, but we'll never forget the days of trying to jam jumbo packs of the gentle-yet-powerful cleanser into our suitcases, so we'd always have a fully stocked supply.
